Values Month Celebration (November 2012)

Presidential Proclamation No. 479 dated October 7, 1994 declares month of November of every year as “Filipino Values Month”.  The Objective is to create moral awakening and national consciousness on human values that are unique genuine and positively Filipino.

With joy and appreciation, I would like to extend my deepest thanks to the Values Education Coordinators and School Heads of both Elementary and Secondary who responded the call of the Malaybalay City Division to give importance to the Values Month celebration.

Special thanks to the following schools who submitted their comprehensive accomplishment report.  Silae National High School headed by HT1 Manuelito Melendez; Bangcud National High School headed by OIC Thelma Labay; San Martin Agro Industrial School headed by SP 1 Dina Flor Raagas; BNHS Sa Jose Annex headed by OIC Roel Tilanduca; Patpat Elementary School headed by ESP 1 Narita Padua; Can-ayan Integrated School headed by ESP1 Sonny Rojas;  Sumpong Elementary School headed by ESP 1  Virgilin Pizzaro;  Aglayan  Elementary School headed by ESP 1 Coslita Muring;  Padernal Elementary School headed by ESP 1 Severina Gamut; Candiisan  and Tintinaan Elementary School headed by ESHT1 Victor Maestrado and; Manalog Elementary School headed by ESP1 Leny Ama.

It is our desire that the Community of Malaybalay City will abide the goal of Education which is to promote Values Education  in three levels of the educational system for the development of the human person committed to the building of “a just and human society” and an independent and democratic nation.

It is observed that we are living in a sick society today.  The increase of violent activities, behavioral disorder and lack of unity in our society, etc. are signs that we need to inculcate positive values of our youth today.

Values Education is not only essential to students but to all of us to achieve peace so as to be worthy and genuine Filipino. (Rosie A. Salupado)

Festivals as Makabayan Resource

Harnessing Community Festivals as Resource for Teaching Makabayan
By:  Ralph T. Quirog, MT II
EPS Designate in Social Studies, Division of Malaybalay City

Our country is unique since it is composed of different groups of people and it is known for its many Festivals celebrated in various parts of the archipelago.

Culture, Traditions and Festivals are alliance that help built artistry among students and in way develop a high sense of governance. The evolution of culture resulted in behavioral changes in the critical mass and made it possible to modify a cultural aspects or trait. Thus in order to propel our nation towards progress, we must encourage the Filipinos to be more mindful of our national culture and foster loyalty for our native land.

Through community Festivals, the young generation would be aware of the Filipino culture. In Festivals, one can learn the different art forms and dances which have been preserved from olden days a display of artworks and crafts made by our ancestors and the local contemporary artist. Thus, be able to appreciate Filipino talents and resourcefulness. We also learn music and dances of Filipino culture. We can hear music produced by tambols, kulintangs or kudyapi that showcase the folkways of our ancestors and the rich heritage of history.

Consequently, creativity and respect are formed to promote a wholesome environment for the people. By learning ones tradition and culture one can assimilate its benefits to create a community of unity, harmony and peace.  For instance, the Pahiyas Festival of Quezon, Moriones Festival of Marinduque are both to remember the Saints and the religiosity of Filipinos. The Kadayawan of Davao and the Kaamulan Festival of our Province of Bukidnon traces and features indigenous culture, beliefs and tradition like hunting, merry-making, planting, chanting and even praising their ancestors’ god Magbabaya for a bountiful harvest.

Culture is the sum of all arts of a country. It brings the best among Filipinos. Culture Festivities are highlights of students’ life. Learning culture exercise the students’ interaction to their moral and social environment for their own good. It greatly affects our economy and probably be catalyst for some people to engaged in trade fair or entrepreneurship during the long celebration.

Community Festivals may also impact the Technology & Livelihood Education (TLE) for students and Edukasyong Pantahanan Pangkabuhayan (EPP) for pupils where they learn a lot of livelihoods such as basket weaving, baking, accessories making, sewing and others. They will gain more with livelihood techniques, their finished products will be displayed during Community Festivals. The amount they earn for the entrepreneurship will be an additional income for the family.

Students and pupils do not have a difficulty in comprehending MAKABAYAN compared to the complicated concepts in English, Math & Science learning areas. Many people especially the youth are attracted to MAKABAYAN activities such as music, drama, dance & other cultural presentations. These performances are called Festivals as a whole. A single Kamikaze concert or a festive street dancing or theater could drain people out of their homes and deposit them into the gatherings. They watch really for entertainment but little do they do not know how much learning resource can be observed from it.

We would most understand festivals if we know where it come from. To understand the present, one must understand the past. Our ancestors were happy people. They have songs for every occasion. From these songs came out the incorporated movements which people mostly think as for enlivenment. Yes, these movements transform the songs into a dance but they really want to reflect in the steps are the expression of their moral principles and beliefs, in history, music, arts and values, they add costumes to have visual uniformity. In the props, their skills are being displayed especially in embroidering, beading and others.

Experiencing Festivals will allow the students to develop a sense of nationalism through deepened appreciation of Filipino Culture. Festivals could really give students and pupils a new MAKABAYAN learning experience; in fact it is a good learning resource.

Coming Across the Nurses’ Orientation in TB in Children

TUBERCULOSIS is an infectious and may be lethal disease that should be paid more attention to, especially when it affects children. In the Department of Education, Tuberculosis in children is one of the focuses we need to view since school children are the spotlight in the workplace.

Since Implementing Tuberculosis Control Program in Children was mandated in the Administrative Order No. 2008 – 0011, providing a policy for casefinding, treatment of children with TB, tracing of children at stake of developing TB and standard recording and reporting of NTP activities are the objectives to be acted on.

As health initiators in the Department of Education, the nurses that were trained from the TB in children, namely Mrs. Mary Larcy B. Pojas and Mrs. Sheryl Jane T. Melendez from the School Health and Nutrition Section designed an orientation to all the nurses in the Division of Malaybalay City to augment the information they have acquired during their training in Oroquieta City.

Last January 4, 2013, the Division nurses were gathered round at the Home Economics Room at Malaybalay City Central School for a one-day orientation in TB in children. Mrs. Pojas and Mrs. Melendez shared the facts about the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) in the Philippines specifically TB control in children. With the said program, the nurses were able to come by the information that TB in children is important to understand because unlike adults, assessing the diagnosis of TB in children is difficult and complex.

The five highlights that were discussed and accentuated during the orientation were the (1) Identification of Tuberculosis in Children, (2) Administering Treatment, (3) Registering and Monitoring Treatment of Children with TB Disease, (4) Prevention of TB in Children and (5) Quarterly Reporting.

Bit by bit, nurses have learned a whole heap about how TB in children can be managed. Careful history and clinical examination is an important approach to consider apart from securing the diagnostic examinations from the client.

The orientation activity was a fun, learning experience since Mrs. Pojas and Mrs. Melendez gave a pre and post tests to the nurses that made the learning process easier and participant-friendly. Also, there was never a dull moment during the discussion because all nurses were participative by reading important highlights, which led to open discussions and sharing of opinions.  Lots of questions were raised and answered and somehow, nurses were able to learn many things.

In general, the TB in children orientation was beneficial. It directed the nurses to a whole new perception about the goals that we need to carry out. Managing TB in children takes a lot of effort and challenge, but with the hand in hand cooperation from all of us, our goals will only direct us to many things—attainment of a better health to a better learning—and a better future to envision.
